Fire Safety Services

As virtually everyone either lives, works or spends time in or around buildings, fire safety affects everyone. Most fires are preventable, yet in the UK alone, the Fire and Rescue Service attend over 200,000 fires each year.

Every UK employer has a duty of care to minimise the risk of fire and to ensure that proper safety standards are in place. At Marpal, we are here to help you put in place suitable and sufficient Fire safety procedures that will protect your employees, occupants and business in the event of a fire.

The starting point for improved fire safety in your workplace is a fire risk assessment.

Fire Risk Assessment

Regardless of the level of risk, a fire risk assessment forms a part of your legal health and safety obligations. In 2006, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order introduced a requirement for all non domestic properties in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to conduct suitable and sufficient fire risk assessments; The Fire (Scotland) Act introduced similar requirement for Scotland.

We work with companies of all sizes within most industry sectors to painlessly carry out detailed fire risk assessments. Our Fire Risk Assessors have accumulated many years of invaluable experience and also specialise in carrying out fire risk assessments on timber framed buildings, petrol forecourts, laboratories, railway stations, care homes etc.

How Our Service Benefits You

Every business will benefit from a simple and well thought out fire safety strategy that ensures legal compliance and sets a high benchmark for safety. This is our approach when working with you on your fire risk assessment; our reports identify practical and achievable actions, which are affordable to implement and closely match the actual needs of your business.

A good Fire Risk Assessment can significantly reduce the risk of fire at your premises. Marpal employ highly qualified IFE registered Fire Risk Assessors. We provide all of our Clients with a clear and easy to understand Fire Risk Assessment Report that satisfies regulatory requirements and includes a Fire Action Plan based on the significant findings as well as photographs; floor plans identifying where remedial action is required may also be included.

Fire Risk Assessment - Annual Renewal

Your Fire Risk Assessment must be reviewed/updated at least annually or when there has been a significant change to your premises, such as a change in use, change in staffing levels or if you've had a fire incident.

Fire Safety Consultancy

If you are planning to construct your new premises, alter or extend, the fire safety risks can be significantly reduced by reviewing the Fire Safety Strategy during the design development stage. Utilising our experienced staff, Marpal can advise architects, designers and clients on their fire strategies, helping to achieve Building Regulation approval. We can also provide "value engineering" solutions by advising how fire safety objectives can be achieved in the most cost effective and space efficient way.

Fire Safety Training - Fire Warden

The key to the successful management of fire safety is to ensure that suitable fire safety training is provided to your employees, so that they know what to do in the event of a fire. Our half day Fire Warden training is designed specifically with your building type and occupancy in mind.

Fire Evacuation Strategies

The fire evacuation plan should consider all aspects associated with the emergency evacuation of the building should a fire occur. In certain types of buildings, an evacuation may not be straightforward and may involve procedures that staff are unfamiliar with and are contrary to the approach for most building types.

Whatever the building type, Marpal can help to develop building specific fire evacuation strategies based on the evacuation needs and number of occupants, whilst recognising any shortcomings the building may have.

Fire Safety Policies for Employers

In addition to having a fire risk assessment and an evacuation strategy in place, non domestic premises should also have suitable fire safety policies and procedures, commensurate with the size and type of premises. Marpal can help in the preparation or review of such fire safety policies and procedures.

Asbestos Management

Asbestos was once ubiquitous in both domestic and commercial construction in the UK. Since the profound health risks associated with asbestos came to light, British businesses have been engaged in the ongoing task of identifying and managing asbestos risk. Every employer has the legally defined responsibility to protect their staff, occupants and visitors from the health risks that result from exposure to asbestos, in accordance with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. At Marpal, our professionally trained asbestos management team can help you identify asbestos on your site, assess the level of risk, manage or conduct safe removal as required.

Who is it for?

Our services are targeted at building owners, employers or those who are responsible for managing construction, maintenance or repair works on a building or structure.

What we offer you:

We offer a range of asbestos management services all aimed at identifying and reducing risk.

Asbestos surveys: The key phase in the management of asbestos is to identify the location, type, condition and extent of any Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs). Marpal can accomplish this by carrying out an Asbestos Survey. The type of survey conducted will be dependent upon the nature and the activities being carried out, or the proposed activities within your premises. There are two types of survey:

Management Surveys
Pre Demolition/Refurbishment Survey
All Asbestos Surveys are all carried out in accordance with HSG264 (Asbestos: The Survey Guide). All our surveyors are P402 Asbestos Surveyor qualified.

An Asbestos Survey Report will be prepared following each survey. The report will assist the building owner/occupier to manage asbestos containing materials (ACM's) in their premises. Where asbestos containing materials are identified we will include recommended remedial actions to be undertaken to mitigate any risks to those occupying the premises.

Asbestos management plans;

Your duties don't end once an asbestos management survey has been carried out, there is a duty to manage. As part of our services we will manage asbestos on your premises by preparing an Asbestos Management Plan. The overall aim is that all asbestos containing materials, through inspections, re-inspections, remedial or removal works are effectively managed and risks of exposure reduced. Our typical Asbestos Management Plans will contain the following information:

i) Company Asbestos Policy and Procedures
ii) Asbestos Survey Reports
iii) Live Asbestos Register
iv) Asbestos Re inspection Forms
v) Register of Acknowledgement

Asbestos re inspections: To manage the risks from the presence of asbestos, Marpal will carry out periodic re-inspections at every property where asbestos containing materials are known to be present, to ensure that they have not been disturbed and are still in a safe condition. During each re-inspection, the Asbestos Surveyor will complete an Asbestos Management Re-inspection Form and provide details of any recommendations (i.e. a recommendation for repair, encapsulation or removal).

Asbestos abatement works - Should a potential contamination be identified due to the release of asbestos fibres during an Asbestos Management Survey, an Asbestos Re inspection or simply during normal occupancy, the building manager/owner will be notified immediately and access to the affected area restricted. Marpal will project manage any asbestos abatement works from the initial planning phase right through to completion, ensuring that the works are carried out safely, efficiently with minimal disruption and in accordance with current legislation.

Asbestos awareness training: We offer a half day training course designed to make your team aware of the dangers associated with asbestos. Marpal provide a comprehensive ½ day Asbestos Awareness Course for those who are liable to disturb asbestos while carrying out their normal everyday work, or who may influence how work is carried out.

The benefit to you:

In the course of their work, many construction professionals are likely to come across asbestos. It is critical that when this happens your team are fully equipped to know what to do to avoid potentially lethal contamination and to ensure continuation of the project as soon as possible.

Are you concerned with asbestos?

CDM Consultants

At Marpal we offer a full range of CDM consultancy services to companies operating in the construction industry. Whatever your role, our focus is to guide you and your business through the CDM process and thus help you improve the delivery, quality and effectiveness of health and safety on your project.

What is CDM?

Every construction project comes with legal health and safety obligations enshrined in statute. These regulations are regularly updated, with the latest change taking effect in April 2015. Every business in the construction sector is required to take these statutory health and safety obligations seriously. The term CDM covers the full spectrum of Construction, Design and Management (CDM) and is the main set of regulations for managing the health, safety and welfare on construction projects.

CDM regulations break the construction process down into two key phases:

1) The pre-construction phase, or design phase, presided over by the Principal Designer, and

2) The construction phase, when the project is actually carried out. At this stage health and safety is the responsibility of the Principal Contractor.

CDM changes you should be aware of

Principal designer: one of the most significant changes in the 2015 regulations is the replacement of the role of CDM coordinator with that of 'Principal Designer'. This isn't simply a change in title. A principal designer has a major role to play in managing coordinating, and proactively monitoring health and safety issues during the pre-construction phase.

CDM Consultant to the Client

A Client under the CDM Regulations 2015 is defined as anyone for whom a construction project is carried out. The definition includes both commercial and domestic Clients; however, the Regulations apply in full for Commercial Clients. The CDM Regulations makes the Client accountable for the impact their decisions and approach have on health, safety and welfare on the project.

When a construction project is being carried out, there are specific duties imposed on the Client. So as to ensure that the Client is compliant, Marpal have developed a fully comprehensive scope of service to assist Clients to comply with their health and safety duties which are imposed on them.

CDM Consultant to the Principal Designer

The appointment of a Principal Designer by the Client will be required on all projects where more than one trade Contractor is working, in addition to the appointment of the Principal Contractor. This ensures that clear lines of accountability and responsibility are set from the start of the project. If the Client does not appoint these roles in writing, they will become liable to fulfill the legal duties, as well as their own (as Client).

Marpal are perfectly placed to assist Principal Designers, as the majority of the Principal Designer's duties were previously being undertaken by Marpal as CDM Co-ordinators under CDM 2007 Regulations. For further details on how we can assist, please call and speak to one of our Consultants or send us an email through our online contact form.

CDM Consultant to the Principal Contractor

Marpal provide health and safety assistance to the Principal Contractor, not only by providing health and safety advice, but also by developing Construction Phase Plans, reviewing method statements and risk assessments, undertaking site safety inspections, checking competence, developing policies and procedures, preparing Health & Safety Files as well as Building Manuals.

We offer a complete Health and Safety Service to Contractors so as to assist them in complying with their health and safety obligations. Through our experienced CDM Consultants we provide a reliable, friendly service which ensures that you comply with the law with the aim of improving health and safety standards.
